Work and life have been crazier than ever, but I have to take a deep breath and tell you all how grateful I am that this is my career. Capturing timeless, joy-filled wedding days lights me up (even during busy times!). Today, as I start to prepare for the fall here in Michigan, I wanted to share a few fall wedding ideas for YOUR Michigan wedding.
If you are planning a wedding in 2023 (or beyond!), I would love to learn more about your wedding day vision. Although there really is no “bad” time of year to get married in Michigan, I do love Detroit in the fall. If you are looking for a light and airy wedding photographer to capture your day, you can learn more about working with me here. Or, head straight to my contact form if you know you would love to work together!
1) Choose a Wedding Venue with a View
This one is self-explanatory but seriously, Michigan is BEAUTIFUL in the fall. When you choose your wedding venue, look for one with a view. For your reception, consider choosing an outdoor tented wedding venue instead of automatically heading indoors.

2) Don’t be afraid to get creative with your Color Palette
There are a few color palettes that will always be gorgeous for fall weddings. Blush & Burgundy, a classic color palette of white florals and greenery, and pretty much anything that’s neutral (think pampas grass!). Warm tones of pinks, oranges, and peaches look amazing against the fall foliage.
With that said, don’t be afraid to try something a little different! I have been loving when couples mix in a few moodier accents with jewel tones like navy and burgundy.
If darker colors aren’t your style, you could also consider adding in pops of a bolder brighter hue. Something like red roses amidst a neutral floral arrangement can add a timeless and romantic flair.
3) Add in some Wood Accents
As I mentioned above, neutrals just look so good in the fall! If you are looking for wedding day signage ideas, or want to try your hand at some DIY wedding decorations, consider adding in some wooden accents to your fall wedding ideas.
4) Choose a Gorgeous Indoor Location for (At Least Some Of!) Your Wedding Photos
I absolutely love outdoor wedding photos in the fall but don’t forget to choose an indoor location that you love as well. When it comes to wedding photos inside, the bigger the windows the better. But don’t stress too much about it, as your wedding photographer I can work in all lighting conditions (and always find the best backdrops!).
5) Bring a Jacket (or Blankets!) for Your Outdoor Wedding Photos
As a wedding photographer, I had to include this in a list of fall wedding ideas. Weather can be unpredictable in Michigan. And the fall? It can be cold. You don’t have to keep your jacket on in every photo, but you should bring something to keep you warm between shots.
6) In addition to cake (or in lieu of), consider a table of your favorite fall desserts!
If you are not a big cake person (or maybe you just have a sweet tooth that loves variety!), why not gather your favorite fall treats together for your dessert table? Bring on the donuts, pies, cheesecakes – whatever gets your mouth watering.
7) Find Creative Ways to Include your Dog(s)!
I am a veryyyy dog-friendly wedding photographer. Guaranteed I am obsessed with your little fur family members (even if we haven’t officially met yet). Whether you decide to choose a dog-friendly wedding venue in Michigan or not, don’t be afraid to include your fur baby in creative ways to share the love on your wedding day.
8) Choose Hot Sauce for Wedding Favors!
Lastly, Add a Little Bit of Spice! Or find a way to “warm up” your guests with your wedding favors. I absolutely love these spicy wedding favors from Sean and Sara last year!
